A little about me: My Family and Future Husband.
Hey there! I wanted to take the time to officially introduce myself and give you a little insight into the photographer behind the lens. I’m Kayla, Detroit based wedding photographer who loves traveling and capturing love. On my Instagram bio, I have my passions described accurately in two phrases: “world traveler” and “love capturer.” Those two phrases the drive behind my business. More on that later!
I grew up in the country with lots of land, lots of siblings, and lots of memories. Being the oldest of five definitely came with a lot of chaos, but I would not trade the chaos for anything. My big family definitely taught me the patience and flexibility that is essential in owning a business. Each year, my amazing momma would plan a road trip for our summer vacation.
We’d hitch up our camper and spend 10-15 days traveling to new states each year. In total as a family, we have traveled to 49 out of the 50 states together. Those vacations were an absolute blast, long, but some of my favorite memories happened on our cross country road trips. I can’t wait to give my future children memories of road trips like mine one day.
On July 11th, 2020 I get married to my best friend. Zachary and I are high school sweethearts and have been together for 5 years. Not gonna lie, as I type this, I cannot believe that in 85 days we will be married. It’s so surreal that time has gone by this fast. Thinking about our journey together, I honestly cannot remember what it was like without him. He is the most kind, thoughtful, friendly person you will ever meet. He truly makes you feel welcome and wanted. I could seriously go on about how amazing he is. For now, just keep a lookout for a “We’re married blog.” for more details about our day!
My Journey to Becoming a Wedding Photographer
I wasn’t always the girl who dreamed about becoming a photographer one day. I knew I loved taking photos (especially of my sisters, shout out to them) but never had a vision for running a business one day. In fact, I decided on pursuing a nursing degree because I wanted to stay away from business as much as possible! After graduating high school I attended Oakland University in hopes to get accepted into their nursing program.
After the first year, I found out I had not gotten accepted into Oakland University’s nursing program. I then took summer classes, transferred to a new college to hopefully get into their nursing program and found out that all of my credits had not transferred over. At that point, I was in my 4th semester of college and was doing everything I could to get accepted into the program. I got rejected a third time and decided this was God’s way of saying, “Kayla you aren’t going to be a nurse, follow your passion.” I took my third rejection as a sign and I decided to pivot into getting a marketing degree so that I could use my marketing degree for my photography business.
Throughout the years, my love for photography grew. I started upgrading new equipment, second shooting at weddings and slowly but surely growing my little business into my career. I had been shooting since I was 16 years old. At 19 years old I decided to launch my photography business. I became a legal business in 2018 and shot my first 5 weddings professionally that year. 4 of them were local and one destination wedding in Jamaica. To date, I have photographed approximately 20 weddings to date with 8 of them being destination weddings.
Looking to the future
I have had tons of failures to get where I am now, including nursing school, but I love where I am at in life. I get to travel the world, work with amazing clients and have a career that I absolutely love. It hasn’t been easy and has taken me lots of time, energy, and money to build my business. However; I’m here and I’m not going anywhere!
I am a dreamer and have quite a few goals for my business. My main goal is to launch my boudoir photography company. The vision behind my brand is to empower women to see their worth and beauty. I am so excited to launch that officially sometime in the summer or fall! I also will be promoting my photobooth company more and will hopefully launch that as a separate brand from my photography company as well! Lots of things in the works, if you want to stay up to date with what’s going on in my business click here to sign up for my monthly newsletter! I can’t wait to see what the rest of 2020 and 2021 have in store for me!
