It is no secret that hiring a professional wedding photographer is expensive. Typically the bride’s and groom’s can expect to spend 12-15% of their budget on just a wedding photographer alone. Photographer’s rates vary, but usually, you can find average professional photographer rates ranging from $1,200.00 – $5,000.00. Those stats on an average wedding in America with a budget of approximately a $30,000.00 budget.
I am sure that a few of you have considered hiring a photographer who is brand new to the business to get a cheap rate. As much as retaining an affordable wedding photographer is appealing, you may want to stick to spending the extra money and hiring a professional. In comparison, you do not wish to hire a brand new contractor to build your house to save some money right? Here are a few reasons why you should always hire a professional wedding photographer.
Your memories matter. After your wedding day is over, the only memories you will are your photos of the day. When looking back on your day, you want to remember how you felt seeing your husband for the first time. The admiration in your father’s eyes, while giving you away. You want to remember how magical your reception was under the twinkling lights, how your ring bearer tore up on the dance floor. All of those memories are important and hiring a seasoned, professional wedding photographer guarantees that your memories are cherished for generations to come. As much as technology makes our life 100 times better, we can never fully trust technology. You can never have too many safeguards in place when protecting your memories. Professional photographers have taken the time and money to invest in backup systems that will guarantee that they do not lose your images. If you are planning on hiring a photographer, I would recommend asking them about their back up systems and what they do to protect your photos.
My backup process is pretty lengthy, but to give you an idea; I always shoot all of your images on two cameras that both have two memory cards inside of them. After your wedding, I immediately back up your files onto two hard drives that are in different locations, and on an online cloud system. While editing your photos, I never delete/format the RAW images off of the memory cards until I have uploaded your final gallery and you have received it. I always make sure your RAW files and edited images are backed up in three different locations. Backup systems ensure that your pictures will never be destroyed. Being skeptical about technology is healthy! Skepticism will preserve your memories.
There is a saying that goes around in the photography community, “an amazing photographer will make your $10,000 wedding look like a $100,000 wedding, and an amateur photographer will make your $100,000 wedding look like a $10,000 wedding.” This saying is so true if you do not have a professional, who captures every detail of your wedding, all of the money spent to make your day the best it could be will be wasted. Trust me; you want to hire a photographer who knows the ropes and has your back. Yes, right now you may be thinking that details are not that important. I can promise you that when you look back on your tenth anniversary, you are going to want to remember how your bouquet or boutonniere looked. Look at full galleries to guarantee that your photographer is just as amazing at capturing details as well as portraits.
Your timeline for your day is crucial. Weddings are stressful and always are notoriously behind schedule. Sticking to your wedding timeline is one of the most challenging parts of your wedding day.
